Our Beginning
A Dream Is Born: The Legacy of Philip Kemmerer
In 1884, Philip Kemmerer, a visionary farmer from Assumption, Illinois, made a profound decision that would impact generations to come. He drafted a will, not only bequeathing his 400-acre farm and assets but also establishing a lasting gift for the future. His instructions were clear: his estate was to be used to create a home “for the orphans and friendless poor of all denominations,” to be managed by the Presbyterian Churches of Central Illinois. With this act, one man's dream has become a legacy of lasting change in the lives of children.
“This program helped me in ways I’ll never be able to explain.”
— Laura Hoskin, former kemmerer child
1914: Fulfilling the Vision
Nine years after Philip Kemmerer’s death, his dream became a reality with the opening of Kemmerer Orphan’s Home in 1914. The home was created to provide shelter and care for orphaned children, initially focusing on Illinois’ homeless youth. In the early years, Kemmerer served not only as a refuge for children but also as a large adoption agency. During this time, the Church took primary responsibility for caring for the needy, with dedicated staff acting as nurses, cooks, teachers, and caretakers for the children.
Today: A Legacy of Care
Today, Kemmerer Village continues to provide vital services to children in need through its Residential Treatment and Foster Care Programs, serving approximately 120 children daily. The organization has evolved from a simple orphanage to a multifaceted program that offers educational support, therapeutic services, spiritual care, and community outreach. As Kemmerer Village looks to the future, it remains dedicated to fulfilling the dream of Philip Kemmerer: providing a safe and nurturing environment for children in need.
“KV saved my life.”

Our Mission
The Mission of Kemmerer Village is to help the Presbyterian Church fulfill its responsibility to minister to children and families who face stress and turmoil in their lives. Kemmerer Village carries out this mission through its direct services to individual families; and by assisting individuals to advocate for the needs and rights of children and families in their community.
At Kemmerer Village, we are dedicated to serve the very special children entrusted to our care.
